FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCA President Chris Long issued the following statement: "Today's scheduled hearing constitutes the fifth hearing on S.B. 174. The committee has heard previously from medical experts in support of this legislation - Dr. David Prentice of the Family Research Council and Dr. Dennis Sullivan of Cedarville University - to completely ban human cloning in Ohio. And today the pro-clone industry finally got its act together and offered opposition testimony and suggestions on how to gut the bill.
Let me state unequivocally that we support S.B. 174 with no amendments and no language changes. The suggestions made today represent nothing more than a 'clone and kill' bill. They want to play a game of semantics by trying to differentiate between types of cloning, but we're not fooled. What we will not ignore is that they would allow for human life to be created, experimented on and then destroyed. While we're not opposed to research and medical advancement, we do believe that it must be grounded in the basic tenet that ALL human life is precious and deserving of our protection. Their substitute language flatly rejects this basic value and treats human life like a commodity.
The Senators on this Committee have a clear and cut choice - support the original ban on human cloning with no amendments and demonstrate a respect for all human life OR gut the original bill, substitute ‘clone and kill' language and put Ohio on a path where human life is regarded as a commodity or the proverbial ‘guinea pig' of researchers.
Enough hearings have been held and the public has had ample time to weigh in with the committee. It is now time to allow this legislation to move forward. We call on Chairman Goodman to schedule an up/down vote on S.B. 174 and then move it to the full Senate for consideration. Anything short of this is unacceptable".
