URGENT: Call to Stop Health Care Bill That Includes Federal Funding of Abortion

House Bill Includes Federally Funded Abortion

November 5, 2009 - Please call your U.S. Representative TODAY or Friday  to oppose federally funded abortion and other assaults on human lives in the House version of the federal healthcare legislation-HR 3962, entitled "Affordable Health Care for America."

Abortion must be explicitly excluded, in writing, in the bill, or it will be regarded as included.

A House vote is expected this weekend, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi is expected to block any pro-life amendments.

Background:
House bill, HR 3962 includes shocking pro-life concerns-some hidden by deceptive wording-which analysts are deciphering as fast as possible.

The bill definitely includes federally funded abortion through the public option, which is a government-run, government funded health insurance agency; and a first, through permitting federal government subsidies to private insurance plans that cover abortion. Also, at least one health insurance plan in every area of the country must cover abortion.

Family Research Council reports "Today the debate is taking another turn as Speaker Pelosi is claiming an agreement has been reached on the concerns over the government funding of abortion. It's a phony "compromise" that would still spend federal dollars on elective abortions. Rep. Brad Ellsworth (D-Ind.) is behind one of the proposals, which pro-life stalwart Rep. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) rebuffed, saying 'it amounts to the federal government taking out a "contract" on the unborn.'"

Also note that protections that existed in earlier versions of the bill to ban federal government promotion of assisted suicide and healthcare rationing for the elderly and other vulnerable people are removed. The bill's undefined terms regarding "end-of-life planning" mandates are raising serious concerns again about death panels, and language is weak on conscience protections for medical personnel who do not want to participate in abortion or other immoral procedures.

HR 3962 is 1990 pages long, and the Congressional Budget Office estimates its cost to implement at about $1.055 trillion.
