(Columbus) Governor Ted Strickland signed Sub. H.B. 7, the Adoption Reform Act. The new law allows birth mothers to receive from the adoptive parents up to $3,000 for a birth mother's living expenses during pregnancy and the 60 days after birth. This new law will aid young pregnant mothers and hopefully increase the number of adoptions statewide. Far too often the reason for abortions is centered on financial constraints.
Additionally, the new law requires that instruction on "adoption as an option" for unintended pregnancies to be included in state-mandated educational curriculums.
The sponsor of this bill, outgoing state Rep. Tom Brinkman of the 34th District, stated that he was delighted with the passage of the bill and said, "It isn't enough just to stop abortion. We must provide women with the viable option of adoption and help them in this life-giving decision."
Rep. Brinkman expressed appreciation for all the pro-life groups that helped with the passage of this momentous bill.
Ohio Christian Alliance President Chris Long states, "Reforming and strengthening the adoption process in Ohio will go a long way to encourage young mothers to choose the option of adoption rather than the tragic decision to abort their children."
Congratulations go to State Representative Tom Brinkman and his staff for their hard work to see this legislation become a reality.
